Twists Glass Studio on Paperweights

Posted on

I have noticed that there seems to be a bit of a paperweight revival going on at the moment. With the collectors this has skipped a generation, and it’s the grandchildren who are now collecting. Also there seems to be a few younger makers and dealers on the scene.

Paperweights have had a bad reputation in the past with their popularity just above beads and below marbles within the glass world, possibly due to all the bubble and swirl type weights that everyone seemed to produce.  With the top end floral and cane composition weights the skill that is used to produce these is second to none;  especially as it is far more difficult to produce small scale than large.  Unfortunately though it is the bubble and swirl type that everyone sees, the top end weights may be out of many people’s price range, or sold without glass collectors ever seeing them.  I always say it is better to have one really nice piece than lots of cheaper production pieces.

Here are two paperweights that I made recently;  both made in the French style classic period.  These are one of ones.

Concentric paperweight made in the old French style and is a one of one.
