Murrine/Murrina

Murrine is making a comeback in the glass world.  Most people mistakenly call this type of work millefiori, but millefiori is a basic form of murrina.

One of the oldest forms of glass making the forming of murrine pre-dates glass blowing and is formed from overlay colours.

There is a huge resurgence of this art form in the USA where the artist mainly concentrate on the picture cane murrine, using borosilicate glass and formed at the torch.

Scotland-based artist Michael James Hunter, who is known for his cane-making, has recently been “giving it a go”.  The picture cane murine is the hardest to make and is very time consuming with no guarantees of success.

Below is Mike’s latest cane.
